How to Create a Warm, Welcoming Entry for the Season

There’s something about the beginning of fall that always makes me want to refresh our home—and the front porch is one of my favorite places to start.
Our porch is relatively small (with plans for an expansion in the works!), so I’ve learned that it really doesn’t take much to give it an entirely new look. A seasonal wreath, layered doormats, updated planters, and a few warm accents can completely change the feel of the entry without a major investment.
For fall, I especially love choosing pieces that can stay out from September all the way through Thanksgiving. Start with a timeless fall foundation, then add a few pumpkins for Halloween or Thanksgiving touches later in the season.
Start with a Fall Wreath
A beautiful wreath is probably the easiest way to signal a new season. For early fall, I gravitate toward natural-looking greenery, warm branches, eucalyptus, or subtle autumn colors rather than anything overly themed.
These styles work beautifully in September but still feel appropriate as Thanksgiving approaches.

Layer Your Doormats
If you’ve followed Pine & Palms for a while, you know I love a layered doormat. It’s such an easy way to make a front entry feel more finished.
For fall, try layering a classic coir mat over a larger neutral, plaid, striped, or textured outdoor rug. Keeping the base fairly neutral means you can use it throughout the season—and potentially year after year.

Refresh Your Planters
You don’t necessarily need entirely new planters for fall. Simply changing what’s inside them can transform your porch.
Swap bright summer flowers for warm-toned faux florals, grasses, branches, or seasonal greenery. I love the idea of using mostly neutral foliage with just a hint of rust, golden yellow, or burgundy.
Add One or Two Seasonal Accents
This is where you can have a little fun without making the porch feel overly decorated.
A ceramic pumpkin lantern, a few neutral pumpkins, or a pair of lanterns near the door adds just enough seasonal warmth. Then, as Halloween approaches, tuck in a few more pumpkins. Once November arrives, remove anything Halloween-specific and the rest of your porch can carry you straight through Thanksgiving.

Keep the Foundation Timeless
The secret to an easy seasonal porch is starting with pieces that aren't actually that seasonal.
Your planters, outdoor furniture, layered rug, lanterns, and other foundational pieces can stay in place while the wreath, florals, pillows, and smaller accessories change throughout the year.
It’s a simple approach, but one that makes our small porch feel fresh and welcoming with every new season—and without starting over every few months.
